(@DanEastman2023) Watching Milwaukee Central Count all day is once again an eye opener. Those who say hand counting ballots would take too much time and resources should watch this show. It will take 16-17 hours to open, verify and tabulate 60,000 absentee ballots. Hundreds of poll workers on the payroll. Rent for the facility. Food for the workers, machines malfunctioning, etc… this takes a long time. Hand counting would not take this much time. A logical and much cheaper alternative would be to dump central count and go back to counting the absentee ballots at the ward polling places like most of the state does. Milwaukee has 177 polling places fully staffed. Divide 60,000 ballots by 177 and you get 340 ballots tabulated at each fully staffed polling place over the 13 hours the polling places are open. Just like the rest of the state. Then, all of the ward ballots are counted in the same place and the counting is done by 8:00 pm and the poll workers home by 9:30 pm. None of this 1:00 am stuff. Central count is about aggregating ballots at scale. It is not more efficient. It is not less costly and it creates conspiracy theories every single election. It needs to go. Tweet.
